Falling in love is the best feeling that anyone can experience so knowing how much you should spend on an engagement ring is part of the deal.

The tingles and warmth that courses through the body are rival to none, taking the next step of choosing to get married to the love of your life is exhilarating, the rush of adrenaline as you envision living together and doing so many things together for the rest of your life is heartwarming.

However, where most couples hit the ‘dilemma button’ is; how much to spend on an engagement ring?

This is a matter of concern to most intending couples and if are is not taken, they may end up spending more than they can actually afford or the intending bride can end up not satisfied with the choice of the ring, so what to do?

Here are some helpful tips on the average cost of an engagement ring and how to decide how much to spend on a wedding ring.

Anne Chertoff, a trend expert at WeddingWire, told Forbes via email that “the average cost of an engagement ring is $5,000 but you should spend what you can afford”.

She advised that people should do their research to find out the style of ring they’d really love and get a range of prices for the style. If you want to pop it as a ‘surprise’ to her, then ask her friends what she might like, let them help you with a little detective work.

Don’t overstretch yourself, when determining how much to spend, you should consider the following:

  • Financial Situation: your current income should be put into consideration when choosing an engagement ring, there is a myth that you should spend 2-months’ salary on an engagement ring but that’s absolutely not necessary, you should also put into consideration your current bills and other things you need to get for your upcoming wedding. You’ll also to have to think about your future, in essence, don’t go overboard trying to outdo yourself.
  • Essence of a ring: you must know the meaning that a ring holds to your spouse; she might just be the type to skip out on the engagement ring as it holds little or no meaning to her or she might just prefer a family heirloom, some ladies don’t wear a ring till their wedding day based on cultural, spiritual or personal belief, in other words, sentiments and beliefs must be put into consideration.
  • Expectations!!! The ring you purchase must be a reflection of your spouse’s taste, she must love and be proud of it so much to show it off to friends, in order to achieve this, you can outrightly ask her for her taste in rings and the type she prefers, you can go ‘window shopping’together, or you can consider asking her friends, trust me, you want to make her not only say yes to you but also to the ring!

Don’t let the national average of the cost pressure you, what matters is that you’re both happy and you can achieve this by having an honest conversation about expectations and finances, and also sentiments and beliefs.

Since you’ll be sharing a life together, you might as well start getting on the same page about things like this.

Discuss your financial situation, present job and its future potential, our future plans  and expectations, it will go a long way in helping you choose an engagement ring, also, it might be just a good idea to save towards getting one, say, about 6 months to the time you want to propose, not a bad idea right?

Many wonders if there’s a difference between an engagement ring and a wedding ring:

Well, the answer is Yes! Absolutely Yes!

Wonder how that is?

Here are some differences:

  • As the name indicates, the engagement ring is a ring that signifies that a person is committed to another and is “off the market” like we love to say, it also signifies to everyone who cares to know that you are spoken for and can’t be approached on a romantic basis. Now, the part of the world you are or better still, your personal belief will determine if the idea of an engagement ring sits well with you or not, albeit, it is a ring that is given to a woman during a proposal and it signifies the starting of a new life. A wedding ring, on the other hand, is exchanged between partners during the wedding ceremony, and are expected to be worn for a long time starting from that time, the engagement ring is most times worn on the wedding ring or band
  • In regards to design, wedding rings are more of the plain-looking and simple designs, which doesn’t- in any way- affect the fact that they come expensive while engagement ring tends to be more extravagant and is characterized by having a center stone made of diamond.
  • The engagement ring is most times picked out by the man while the wedding ring is picked out together by both partners.
  • Both rings are worn on the 4th finger on the left hand and they symbolize love, commitment and faithfulness to your spouse and vice-versa. Moreover, it’s advisable to buy a matching set, reason is because, the tone of color, style, and design go hand in hand and it will save you the stress of having to look for a matching copy for the engagement ring, also it helps in having the same fit around the finger, that is, one isn’t more tight than the other.
  • Although, some do say that, if you are not certain she’ll agree to get married to you, then it’s advisable to get the engagement ring alone, this has a ring of truth to it, this is to save expenses, however, if you have been planning your marriage together, then you can go ahead to get a wedding set with all confidence.
